The Healing Power of Lemons

You thought it just made for refreshing lemonade or added zest to your chicken or salad dressing, never would you have guessed that this fruit that makes you pucker could have so much power. Girl me neither but then I saw the light. Lemons are a rich source of healing chemical compounds that improve complexion, immunity, and block cell changes that can lead to cancer. You can rub lemon juice on your face to lighten dark marks caused by acne or place it in your homemade cough syrups for soothing sor throats.

Back in the day, British sailors ate lemons to prevent scurvy, a disease that when left untreated can cause heart muscles to enlarge to the point of bleeding, and ultimately leading to sudden death. Scurvy is brought about by a lack of Vitamin C. Fortunately, for those smart sailors, a single lemon has 39 grams of vitamin C, which is more than half the Daily Value. But if you aren't worried about scurvy, which chances are you're not, lemons have other benefits too.

Colds-The vitamin C in a lemon  lowers histamine levels. Histamine is the chemical that causes stuffy noses and runny eyes.

Breast Protection-Limonene is a chemical found in the lemon peel and its white membrane. It has considerable anti-tumor activity. Scientists tested the substance against human breast cancer cells and found that it prevents their growth. Limonene also causes estrogen to break down into a weaker form, which can be helpful, because according to studies, higher levels of estrogen are linked to increased risk for breast cancer.

Varicose Veins-Lemon zest is rich in a group of antioxidant plant chemicals called bioflavonoid which strengthens the walls of veins. It also reduces vein pain and in many cases reduces the occurrence of varicose veins.
